COM1006 Artificial Intelligence and Its Applications
This module aims to provide a broad overview of both classical and contemporary Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies and their many applications. It begins with the very concept of AI: what do we mean by intelligent computer applications, and the historical development of AI systems. Next, from knowledge representation to problem solving, from neural networks to deep learning, the module then introduces the common AI technologies from the classical approaches to the recent developments in computational intelligence. The scientific methodologies involved in the development of AI systems are discussed. Recent developments in AI applications and their social implications are investigated. This module is designed for students without computing or programming background.
COM3107 Machine Learning Techniques and Applications
Machine learning uses interdisciplinary techniques such as statistics, linear algebra, optimization, and computer science to create automated systems that can make predictions or decisions without human intervention. This module familiarizes students with a broad cross-section of models and algorithms for machine learning. It focuses on the neural networks, the supervised learning and the unsupervised learning. Open source platform (e.g., TensorFlow) will also be covered.
COM6102 Distributed Systems and Cloud Computing
This module offers an overview of current distributed computing technologies, and distributed algorithms, that underlie today's cloud computing applications. The concepts and models covered in the module includes: cloud service models (SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS), virtualization techniques, cloud infrastructure and networking, cloud and distributed storage (e.g., key-value/NoSQL stores), distributed algorithms (e.g., leader election, and failure recovery), etc. We will also look at some industry frameworks such as Hadoop, Map/Reduce and Spark.
COM6103 Big Data Security and Privacy
The module examines the emerging trends and issues in security and privacy of big data applications, such as web and mobile services. Big data analysis could be beneficial to businesses and the society, but in general it involves collection of sensitive or even confidential personal data, which could result in devastating consequences to the person, businesses, and the society if the data are mishandled. Hence, the module focuses on identifying selected aspects of security and privacy issues and challenges in such big data applications. It explores existing approaches and available tools to enforce security and preserve privacy, and equips students with the ability to evaluate the security and privacy of a solution to a security and/or privacy issue.
For teaching undergraduate modules, applicants should have a Master’s degree or above in related disciplines. Relevant teaching experience at university level is preferred. Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree and strong industrial experience in relevant fields will also be considered.
For teaching postgraduate modules, applicants should have a Doctoral degree in related disciplines. Relevant teaching experience at university level is preferred. Applicants with a Master’s degree and strong industrial experience in relevant fields will also be considered.
